Wyoming Energy Startup is Changing the Future of Energy

Wyoming has long been known as a hub for extractive energy resources, with vast supplies of coal, oil, and gas. According to recent data, a significant portion of Wyoming's GDP comes from the coal, oil, and gas industries. According to a report by the Wyoming Economic Analysis Division, the mining sector, which includes coal, oil, and gas extraction, contributed approximately 22% to Wyoming's GDP in 2020 and in the third quarter of 2023 the annualized value of the mining industry was $8.5 billion - the largest sector in the state. .

It's important to note that while these industries are substantial contributors to the state's economy, Wyoming is also diversifying its economic base with growing sectors like tourism, technology, and renewable energy. This diversification is key to ensuring long-term economic stability and growth.

Startups are playing a key role in this transformation in teh economic balance of Wyoming’s economy. One startup in particular is having a big impact in the state, with implications for change nation-wide. Bill Gates’ company, Terra Power, is building a micro-nuclear facility based on a Natrium plant.  This uses a unique cooling system that is much safer, and it operates at a scale that is much smaller than previous nuclear plants.  As a result, it is possible that this plant could be opening as early as 2030, compared to decades of delays for traditional plants.  

Nuclear is a big part of the future carbon free energy ecosystem.  Its benefits include consistent output unlike wind and solar.  

This project is all made possible by the collaboration of state and local governments with special federal government programs.
